Enter the Darkness of Disbelief: Great Gatsby Beats Star Trek

Nobody’s Opinion

Last night my family and I went to see the new Star Trek movie, Into Darkness.  We went an hour early, because it was opening weekend and we wanted to get a good seat.Star Trek Into darkness poster

And low and behold, on a Sunday afternoon, there were only 8 people in the audience. By all accounts, this was one of the best Star Trek movies ever made in the franchise, and had been promoted in the theater for well over a year…so I couldn’t help wondering..What country am I in?

What happened to America?

Come on! This is one of America’s most famous franchises…what in the world was everybody doing?

When I got home, I got on the internet and saw that the Great Gatsby had done far better box office sales than Iron Man Three AND Star Trek.

What? They did THAT boring old story again? They had to do it over in 3D so that people could FEEL even worse about their lives? Tornadoes are ravishing the land, and we are watching fluff movies?

I don’t care if they spit champagne in 3D at the audience, It was a boring story, and a boring movie the first time around.

You go to look at the clothes and the ostentatious wealth, and dream. The Great Gadsby

During the last depression, it was Shirley Temple that everyone flocked to see. But was it Shirley or the same old poor girl becomes rich, and always has a happy ending that they wanted?

I have never been a big fan of Fitzgerald. Don’t ask me why, I just think he was a bit like his own characters…lots of bluster but not much meat. He was always trying to make some profound point, but always came up…short, as if he wasn’t sure what he thought.  He had his moments, but Gatsby was not one of them.

I find this lax in American movie going very disturbing. I realized the economy is really, really bad, and going to a movie is much too expensive, but just the fact that it came in third from the people that did go is disturbing.

Does that mean that only liberals can afford movies now?

I can’t help thinking: What in the world would make the American public choose a boring movie about some rich guy wanting a blond bimbo over an action-packed, futuristic movie about outer space?

Does it all come down to people want to dream that they will someday be rich, as opposed to someday they would travel to other planets? The last Powerball numbers support that. They could start charging five dollars a ticket and everyone would still play,—you know why?

Because they think their chances of ever getting rich has been cut off at that knees. And they are right.kris 63

Has closing NASA really put death into our dreams as humans….where you dream of future inventions…and the air car. I’m crazy about air cars. I’ve seen real mechanics working on them and posting their work on Youtube.

Forget those stupid solar panels. Get on those air cars. You want to get rid of the Saudis? Make them eat sand.

Where’s the President that stands up and says: Science fiction has many times before foreseen our future, therefore, I am investing in air cars.

I feel like I’m in the Twilight Zone.

Tonight when I got home, I saw that CNN took a poll and came up with the fact that despite all the scandals, Obama is still very popular.

They must have polled people coming out of the Great Gatsby

You’re kidding me. Nobody wants to see Star Trek and Obama is still loved.

What planet am I on?

I still, can’t believe it.

But then again…I do remember Chris Pine, the actor playing Captain Kirk going on a talk show and saying he was a big liberal and he supported Obama.

Elephants do remember, don’t they?

  1. By the Lord Harry, I almost forgot for a half a day, to mention Gatsby. Not a lot for me to say, especially as it is headed by that nancy De Crapio. But a shining star, a jewel fallen from the box and peeping from behind a powder puff (no, not the nancy), Carey Mulligan is in it as Daisy. She has appeared in Dr Who, you know and did well. And if she were to disrobe in private when I happened to be conveniently at hand, she could have me. 🙂

    • Thank you for informing us all the REAL reason everyone went to see Gatsby.   It all comes down to sex. 🙂

  2. I grew up on Star Trek. Like Dr Who, it has been a constant entertainment for most of my life. But like Dr Who, some of the characters have developed well and some not. And like Dr Who some of the adventures are a bit over the top and on their way to rock bottom. But heck, they are old friends and I am a loyal sort of chap who can be quite forgiving.

The re-vitalisation of the earlier than early days of ST is disconcerting in a number of ways. That a Cadet who shaves just once a week can suddenly be elevated to Captain is quite unbelievable. Taking the trappings and authority of rank in a dire emergency is one thing (The original ST James Kirk was named after Captain James Cook, who discovered Oz and there was a tradition of letting junior Lts have ‘Flag Captain’ honorary rank to take small captive ships back to port), but elevating one from Cadet, not even a friggin’ Midshipman or Ensign as you call them, in-front of the entire bigwiggery of Starfleet Command is throwing tradition overboard.

It is like that other film, Iron Eagles I think it was called, where a 16 year old was deemed quite capable of flying an F16 into an unauthorised raid into a foreign country. Just stupid as a concept, even in a fiction film.

I have seen the trailers to the latest Star Trek film and it sure looks Special Effects worthy. But what the hell have they done with Kirk? He wears more mascara than Janeway has in her supply locker on Voyager. He is a handsome lad, well enough, and well chosen for the role facially, as he even looks as one can imagine the original Kirk looked in his younger days. But the make-up ??!! Come along.

The Spock actor is fine. He carries it well. And Ben Cumberbund is a fine up-and-coming villain. He is English of course: the villain du Jour in American films. But just what the lead woman in her fine lingerie is doing there I cannot imagine. Whoops. Wrong. I can imagine. As with most young-at-heart old guys and all the 13 year old boys, I am quite happy to ogle her curves and fashion choices though. When can we expect the lady Doctor in the series (the one on TNG ) stripping off to show us her knickers, I wonder. Will we now see La Perla product placement and minor sub-plot wars with Victoria’s Secrets? Have I missed some episodes? Will the next full length film in this new revival have full frontal nudity from the Communications Officer and the Tiberius appendage of Kirk being waves ‘on screen’ for the first encounter with the Klingons? It would explain why they are so enraged at the Federation.

I see a merkin fleet coming at warp speed.

    • You know, it was a film you could take your six year old to.   And you can’t say that about many of them. Not to mention, they dedicated the film to the 9/11 victims.   I have to agree that giving a full command to youngsters is way off life, but then again, it’s all fantasy, and meant for fun.   Look at it this way: A young man has to have some dreams of being the hero, even if it’s only in films.   Better than all these films made about what sum bags men are, don’t you agree?
