Slaves and Sugar

Nobody Remembers

When you pour sugar on your morning breakfast cereal, do you feel like a racist?

You might. It was the love of sugar that started up the slave trade in the mid-15th century.  And it wasn’t the southern American democrat that was the first to get this going, it was the Portuguese:slave trade two

Somebody forgot to tell Al Sharpton.

From A History of the American People:

The Portuguese entered the slave trade in the mid 15th century, took it over and,  in the process, transformed it into something more impersonal, and horrible, than it had been either in antiquity or medieval Africa. The new Portuguese colony of Madeira became the center of a sugar industry, which soon made itself the largest supplier of western Europe. The first sugar mill, worked by slaves, was erected in Madera in 1452. This cash industry, was so successful that the Portuguese soon began laying out fields for sugar cane on the Biafran Islands, off the African coast. As the sugar industry expanded, salves began to be numbered in thousands

The Portuguese were soon selling African slaves to the Spanish, who, following the example in Madeira, occupied the Canaries and began to grow cane and mill sugar there too.

Yes, for the love of sugar the blacks were enslaved for decades. slave trade

Next time I see a black person eating a snickers bar, I’m going to shout at them:” In honor of you ancestors… DON’T EAT THAT!”

So, slaves became a big business all because of the demand for sugar.  And now, sugar makes slaves of us all. Nothing can bring me to my knees quicker than a freshly baked glaze doughnut.

Nobody talks about Portugal anymore. In fact, it’s been downhill for that country since the 15th century. Tell me, what is Portugal good for besides being hard to locate on a map?

If blacks want to try to get reparations for what happened to them so long ago, then they should take it up with the Portuguese…they started it.

Yes, it was the Portuguesa merchants that made slavery the vast institution that it became. (To be fair, the Muslims had more slaves, but you didn’t hear it from me.)

Remember that next time you hear anyone claim that America is the most racist nation on the planet.

America got RID of her slaves…but…for better or worse, we are still slobbering slaves to that little crystal sweet heaven in a spoon…called sugar. Let’s hope the Chinese workers making all those Apple phones get their fair share. sugar
