Bob Costas: Eulogy for the Common Conservative “Stan the Man”
Nobody’s Opinion
How do we judge our idols? At the funeral of Stan Musial on Saturday, held in the lovely Catholic ‘New’ Cathedral in downtown St. Louis…Bob Costas pretty much hit a home run. While I was crying at his words…and breaking up along with Bob when he got to the part (see video) about how Stan Musial said “Deal me in.” to the blacks in the clubhouse…it wasn’t until later that I remember Bob’s recent remarks about gun control during a football game not too long ago. (He wants to ban them)
You have to remember…Bob is a liberal…and yet, here was a liberal crying over the very things that conservatives pretty much take for granted. Decency. Integrity. Honesty. Stan Musial had all those traits..not only throughout his career, which stopped 50 years ago, but throughout his life. Anyone here in St. Louis, who ran into Stan Musial..got a big smile, and at the least, an autograph.
Conservatives everywhere, take those tratis for granted. To us, those traits are as easy as breathing. We didn’t think nothing of Stan being the way he was…after all…he was conservative. Went to church, stayed married to his high school sweetheart. Never put anyone down for their politics. He was a great ballplayer, sure…but there are millions that live their lives the same way Stan did.
I’m not sure Bob knows that.
An hour before the funeral, I saw an interview with Robert Redford. Robert Redford was repeating the Obama’s mantra: People don’t want change, but it’s coming regardless of whether they like it or not. Period. He was talking about conservatives.
Here’s Obama’s words:
There are going to be some areas where that change is going to be very hard for Republicans. I suspect, for example, that already there are some Republicans who embrace the changing attitudes in the country as a whole around LGBT issues and same-sex marriage. But there’s a big chunk of their constituency that is going to be deeply opposed to that, and they’re going to have to figure out how they navigate what could end up being divisions in their own party. And that will play itself out ove
r years.
Yes…change is coming to the Stan Musials of the world whether they want it or not. (Nobody says: Be careful what you wish for…you just might get it.)
Among the crowd at the funeral was all the town’s sports figures: Whitey Herzog, Tony La Russa, Commissioner Bud Selig, and Robert Pujols. It was a very long program because they showed the whole Catholic Mass on TV.
So— Here was two great ‘conservative’ American traditions: The Catholic Mass and American Baseball, and the theme of the day, was not only what a great ball player that Stan had been, but what a great human being. Bob spoke as if…nobody sees this kind of decency anymore.
Obviously not him.
To Bob…(by his speech) men like Stan are..rare. Morality, decency, living a humble life…that’s the past.
Our country was founded on morality. On decency. On each man making his own mark, and then giving back. And those very important rules are based on religion. (That Obama smirks that we “cling”to.) That shows how much we have changed…Lance Armstrong, the steriods…you don’t have to look too far to see corruption in sports, or politics, or anything anymore for that matter.
And while Bob Costas eulogy will go down in history as being one of the best ever given about any man, Stan’s brother-in-law made an even more important reminder than the fact that Stan wasn’t prejudice. (As so many conservatives ALSO…are not.) He reminded everyone, that Stan Musial worked with the Catholic Church AND the Pope, (Back when Reagan was President) to help funnel money over to Poland, which helped defeat the communists in Russia and Poland. When Obama presented him with the Congressional Metal of Freedom last year, he certainly didn’t mention what the man did.
I’m sure, Obama could have cared less.
The “change” that Robert Redford and Obama are talking about is why I found this funeral so sad. I think, the fact that Bob sees the abhorrent behavior that has become the norm in our sports was why he was crying, and maybe he was asking himself… Why can’t all men be as decent as Stan Musial?
Well, when they have leaders like Obama, and movie stars like Robert Redford…trashing the country and its traditions on a daily basis..you can expect a lot more tears.
The real fact is: there are still millions of Stan Musials in America, living lives of ‘quiet desperation” helping their neighbors, loving their families, trying to be good citizens(buyinig McDonalds for the grandkids on Saturday)—and they are being attacked, while the sport figures, rap singers, horror fiction writers, movie stars…etc…are getting pats on the back for being basically rich drug addicts, adulterers, cheaters, and liars. The boys of summer are found on the ski slopes of Aspen, waiting for the next cocaine fix to come in.
Like Stan Musial, the common conservative man will never get on the news. And it’s that common, decent man who they want to not only ‘change” but crush.
Nobody could stop thinking about that through the whole funeral.
When the coffin was carried into the church, it had only a white linen drape. No flowers were on it. No roses of any sort. It was simple. Plain…like the man.
His grandson said “Gee, I had to follow Bob Costas.” with a sigh, but then said probably the most important thing: He looked into the camera and said he wanted everyone watching to try to be just like Stan.
If only.
Stan the Man, is the quintessence of the America that most of us grew up with. They drapped him in the American flag as they carried him out, as if to say to all the liberals: Here lies an American dream…watch and weep, and honor “Stan the Man.” He was the best of us.
And should you ever get to St. Louis, go stand in front of Stan’s statue, and bring a harmonia, and play a tune. Stan would love it…he never went anywhere without his. And don’t forget to read what it says:
“Here stands baseball’s perfect warrior. Here stands baseball’s perfect knight.”
The Future of the Digital Age According to Jaron Lanier
Nobody’s Opinion
Okay…so Joran doesn’t exactly have the slick look of the other internet guru’s. When Tom Beebe (Thanks Tom) sent me an article about this guy last week, I must admit, besides being upset about the “cashless’ society that the internet is taking us, I had not thought much about the other side— but I am now.
So Nobody Asks: Is there a downside to the internet?
Men love to invent…and thank God. For the short time they have been here, they went from clubbing each other with clubs, to threatening each other with the atomic bomb proving that many inventions have a double edge sword. One’s man’s ceiling is another man’s floor, and even Paul Simon would admit that he’d rather be a hammer than a nail.
While the sheer genius of the atomic bomb can be marveled at…the world is now in continuous fear of the next ‘nuclear’ attack, and some of us wish that it had never been invented..and did they REALLY think the future consequences of it through?
Obviously not.
And so it is with the new digital technology–like the atomic bomb it is having a downside effect. With all the wonderment that has come with the ease of home computers, there is a man who is pointing out, that it could be the destruction of us all.
And that’s where Jaron Lanier comes in. Jaron was a Silicon Valley digital rock star. He was a pioneer and publicizer of virtual-reality technology (computer-simulated experience. ) and knew all the big guys; Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg, —-Google, Facebook, etc…and he is so upset about what he has created, he is going around the world and warning the rich guys…of what he calls, “digital Maoism.”
Jaron Lanier, calls this “digital Maoism” indicting “internet intellectuals” like Facebook and Google of being “spy agencies.” He wants to subvert the “hive mind,” as the web world’s been called, before it engulfs us all, destroys political discourse, economic stability, the dignity of personhood and leads to “social catastrophe.” Instead of an ever-upward enlightenment, it is just as likely, he argues, that the crowds will devolve into an online lynch mob.
And who could deny this? Remember how excited Obama was about the Arab Spring? Remember how it was declared that the whole thing came about because of FACEBOOK? Without FACEBOOK the riots would not have evolved. But what came of that? While Zuckerberg was taking victory laps with Obama’s plans to get rid of Mubarak, a huge vacuum was created and the Muslim brotherhood jumped into that hole, and took the reigns of power, leaving the ‘useful idiots” staring at their cell phones and wondering what the hell happened.
And Jason sees this as not a good thing. It’s Mob rule…which is what democracy is, and our founders hated it. He explains it as:
“An enabling and foreshadowing of mob rule, not a growth of democracy, but an accretion of tribalism. But it slowly is turning us into a nation of hate-filled trolls. We have economic fear combined with everybody joined together on these instant twitchy social networks which are designed to create mass action. What does it sound like to you? It sounds to me like the prequel to potential social catastrophe.”
And then there’s the economic side, which is much more damaging. Here’s more:
“I’d had a career as a professional musician and what I started to see is that once we made information free, it wasn’t that we consigned all the big stars to the bread lines. They still had mega tour profits. Instead, it was the middle-class people who were consigned to the bread lines. And that was a very large body of people. And all of a sudden there was this weekly ritual, sometimes even daily: ‘Oh, we need to organize a benefit because so and so who’d been a manager of this big studio that closed its doors has cancer and doesn’t have insurance. We need to raise money so he can have his operation.’
And I realized this was a hopeless, stupid design of society and that it was our fault. It really hit on a personal level—this isn’t working. And I think you can draw an analogy to what happened with communism, where at some point you just have to say there’s too much wrong with these experiments. So by taking value off the books, you’re actually shrinking the economy.” whoever has the biggest computer can analyze everyone else to their advantage and concentrate wealth and power. [Meanwhile], it’s shrinking the overall economy. I think it’s the mistake of our age.”
Since Jason is a musician also, he sees the damage here. Gates, Jobs, Zuckerberg, they just don’t get it because the ONLY job they ever had was creating the internet. But when you’re a musician you dream of the hit record, and with free downloads…the monetary rewards of original music went out with the proverbial free downloads onto your hard drive.
And not just musicians…the whole print industry has been changed: thousands of newspapers and magazines have shut down. Think of how many journalists have lost their jobs. And SO much misinformation is put on the internet, it’s hard to tell what’s true and what isn’t.
Many of our schools are getting rid of books, and giving the kids IPADS. They have stopped teaching cursive writing…texting will become so big in the future, that future generations will not even know how to make a complete sentence. Already in China, the kids are forgetting how to read, because all they do is text. Not to mention the waste of time everyone spends on their computers.
AND…when everything is online: books, money—- all that you do and say will go to the few people who run the world and who will have the power to completely control every single thing. Jaron is right. Jason even goes so far as to blame the housing crash on the internet:
“The rise of networking has coincided with the loss of the middle class, instead of an expansion in general wealth, which is what should happen. But if you say we’re creating the information economy, except that we’re making information free, then what we’re saying is we’re destroying the economy.”
To my mind a over leveraged unsecured mortgage is exactly the same thing as a pirated music file. It’s somebody’s value that’s been copied many times to give benefit to some distant party. In the case of the music files, it’s to the benefit of an advertising spy like Google [which monetizes your search history], and in the case of the mortgage, it’s to the benefit of a fund manager somewhere. But in both cases all the risk and the cost is radiated out toward ordinary people and the middle classes—and even worse, the overall economy has shrunk in order to make a few people more.”
We read of online bullying leading to teen suicides in the United States and, in China, there are reports of well-organized online virtual lynch mobs forming…digital Maoism.”
You know, too many of us know someone who has been grieviously hurt by the internet. I know a man whose girlfriend got mad at him, and went online to FACEBOOK and told all kinds of horror stories to their whole network of friends, and it even got back to his work. They were lies, and somehow he forgave her, and they made up, but the damage had been done. This is happening to millions daily. There is no recourse in court….in fact the law can’t keep up with it.
And if you think that the powerful people will think twice about hurting society, remember the story of Zuckerberg. When he first invented FACEBOOK as a student, he put up a very demoralizing contest and rated all the women on his campus as “ugly” or “cute” and everyone on campus got to have fun putting down women. Typical liberal. He was old enough to have a moral compass, but he had none.
It was…disgusting….and yet, Zuckerberg was forgiven for such an insidious prank because he was a genius. The question is, when these young, rich, and sometimes very immature boys work with Presidents, you DO have a Maoism. Zuckerberg has moved to China to avoid taxes.
No doubt Zuckerberg thinks he is saving the world, he’s not like Jaron who sees beyond himself. You COULD say that the internet is a young technology..it will work out the bugs in time.
I’m sure they thought the same thing about nuclear warfare. But unlike the atomic bomb…so far, we’ve been kept pretty safe from it..it doesn’t affect our daily lives. But the internet is working it’s magic every single day. Hopefully…Jaron will make the rich elites think: After all…he’s right…we are NOT gadgets….but like the ‘ape’: We sure do love them.
Dear Mr. Simons….I Want What Your Drinking…
Nobody’s Opinion
One of my readers, sent me a very interesting article written by a Mr. Roger Simon, called, “Mind Your Own Beeswax!”: How Social Conservatives Can Win by Losing”
Mr. Simons’ main beef is about social conservatives and how they want to interfere in the lives of others, thereby being just as hypocritical as the left ( Read the article here.) –and that’s why the Republicans lost due to the women’s vote.
Oh my— blame it on those poor women. Those stupid Republicans need to be MORE hypocritical!
Being a woman myself, I wondered how I got a such a whole other sense from the elections–so I am simply going to write a letter to Mr. Simon, because frankly, I think he has been watching too much CNN. ——–
Dear Mr. Simon
After reading your article “Mind Your Own Beeswax” : How Social Conservatives Can Win by Losing.”, I must admit, I had no idea that it was the women that voted in Obama. I’ve heard from several different sources that it was the Latino vote. I’ve also heard that Romney lost because the Ron Paul supporters stayed home. There is a good possibility that Obama won by fraud, because of the fact that Soros bought the main frame that tallies the votes in Spain. I’ve already posted proof of how easily that could be done. Most people pick one or the other depending on their opinions on life, but the fact of the matter is, Obama got less votes than he did 2008, and Romney had much more support than McCain, so what’s the real truth? You say, it’s because of the Republican’s stance on women’s social issues.
Mr. Simon, I don’t recall Romney or any of the Republican candidates coming out and saying, “Yes, we must repeal Roe VS Wade, and all women should get back into the home and start having babies.” If you have a video of that somewhere I’d love to see it.
Nope. It was the Democrats that put that fear into the hearts of all the young single women, (the married women voted for Romney) because they know how hard it is right now for these women. They are having to raise the babies on their own, without another paycheck to help out, and on top of that, having to buy expensive Nike’s and cell phones, and pay for cable TV all by themselves simply because they can’t find a man to marry them, now can they? An extra paycheck in this economy goes a long way.
And why can’t they find a man to marry them? Are you saying they see an advantage in being single?
It was the Democrats who MADE the women the issue, not the Republicans, who were playing pretty poor defense on the ‘women’s’ issues the whole time. It’s the liberals who think that young single girls must not be …what did Obama say? Be burdened withe a baby. That’s right, a baby is a burden.
And in this economy, to a young single women, he’s right. Whew…the cost of diapers alone is enough to make you wonder if you will be able to afford paying that monthly IPHONE bill. After all, you NEED that phone to send baby pictures to all your friends!
Obama is giving women free condoms and abortions, so they can keep having sex, and still be able to use that what little money they are making at the Pizza place on basic necessities: Like buying new pumps, SUV’s, or IPADs. Is it any wonder that they vote for him?
Should the Republicans have offered free IPads to the girls? Why not just buy the votes like the Democrats..that would make more sense, then you can keep your conservative principles.
“For every single woman out there, who votes Republican, we will give her a brand new Ipod, Iphone, AND a $100 dollar certificate to Banana Republic!”
There, I just put the Republicans back in power. You’re welcome. But back to your article—
You said: “The Right is guilty of its own kind of hypocrisy. It’s interesting how some of those who most vociferously object to government interference in our economic affairs are most desirous of government interference in our personal lives.”
Nobody Says: Okay. What Republican politicians actually said, that if elected, they would repeal the right to abortion? Romney said he would leave it up to the states I believe. That’s a far cry from some kind of draconian law of control. But I suppose you think passing a law that says we ALL have to pay for that single girl’s abortion is a very good idea. So far, I did not hear Paul Ryan or Romney say they were going to limit abortions. State some names on this sir…help me out.
You said: “Republicans will be the nanny for our private lives.”
Nobody Says: HUH? Like I said, WHERE did you get this from? Obama will soon sign the Agenda 21 which will give the United Nations a right over YOUR child. You lose all parental rights. That’s about as private as you can get. Come on…fess up. James Carvel is your second cousin…right?
You said; “Republicans have been losing the women’s vote for years and it is only going to get worse if we don’t take the social issues off the table and put them back where they belong, at home.”
Nobody Says: The only people who put social issues on the table this past election was the Democrats. They were the ones who used the mantra force of those “evil” pro-lifers, and the young single women were stupid enough to buy it. Once again… are you from MSNBC? What did I miss here?
You said: “The young vastly favor gay marriage. If you don’t think it’s going to be a fait accompli in the Western world in 25 years , you’re living in a cloud cuckoo land.”
Nobody Says: Yes, you support gay marriage. You have a RIGHT to support it, but not a right to force everyone else to . Ever wonder why? Because for the past 10 years, the American people have been hit daily with propaganda about “gay rights” and if they are Christians and don’t like it, they are labeled as EVIL.
So, you think because the left’s brainwashing has finally gotten the young people to accept it, every person who is against gay marriage, should just accept it too. After all,….the vote is in.
I guess you accept Obama’s death panels too?
You also say—“Marriage should be outside the government”
Nobody Says: Well…I agree…then the gays could get civil marriages. Why not? Let them pay big taxes too. And hey, there are states now where they can go get married, right?
BUT…gay have rights already…so why in the name of “gay” should Christians Churches should be FORCED to perform gay marriages by law? Or pay for abortions by force of law? And it’s the will of Obama to force everyone to bend to his private views.
If that’s not against liberty, than I don’t know what is. You’re a libertarian, right? What part of ‘liberty’ do you uphold? The L and the E?
The world has changed, and you are basically saying: Admit defeat….your conservative social morals are old and outdated and the women have arrived. Sacrifice your principle, for the good of my pocketbook.
Nobody Thinks that’s exactly why we will all be slaves. It’s in the communist plan (that all the leftist loonies use) to get rid of religion, AND the family…and then the state can control everything.
But..libertarians haven’t figured that out yet. Not that I stand for any party. ( I remain Independent.)
You letter makes sense, from a liberal point of view…You present it as pragmatic ( the young all accept homosexuals so that makes it democratically right) and women will have abortions forever ( so accept it as a fact) but what you do NOT accept, is the liberty of religious people to have their own views on the matter.
And in that respect, you might want to check..I think you might be a closet democrat.
So…let me get this straight: The nation is now filled with fatherless children, and women who can’t afford too many kids, so abortions needs to stay legal, and conservatives should just get off the “social” subject, admit defeat, and get to fixing the economy, even though the taxpayers will be PAYING for all these women and children food and housing, etc, AND abortions and contraception’s on top of it?
And if we did, Republicans would start winning?
I want what you’re drinking, Mr. Simon….I think they call it a Libertarian Zombie..
Am I right? Or…are do you live in Colorado?
Are You REALLY a Liberal and Don’t Know it?
Nobody Cares
____about the meaning of words.
I was talking today to my good friend amfortas in Australia (many of you know him from his more than enlightening comments) and he told me, while laughing, that Americans have so many things backward: For instance, we call our Democrats, liberals. To an Englishman, a liberal is a Ronald Reagan, who by our definition was a true conservative. They have the liberals and the labor parties. We have the ‘liberals’ and the ‘conservatives.’
After watching the video, it seems I am a classical liberal, as is …Ron Paul.
SO…WHY do the Democrats in this country call themselves liberals when they, by the English definition, are completely the opposite?
because they can’t call themselves socialists. In fact, up to this past year, it was a dirty word in America. Just four years ago, when running for President, Hillary finally did come out of the closet and admit she was a “progressive.”…communist being too strong a word. The Democrats always lie and confuse…whenever possible.
So, once again, the Nobody learns from the somebody. Give the video a watch, you might find out that YOU TOO…are a liberal! OMG…Who knew? And, it’s about time we ‘correct’ those masquerading as liberals out of respect for the real meaning of the word…don’t you think?
(Thanks to amfortas)
